CBD for Dummies

You see it everywhere these days. CBD is being touted as a miracle compound that offers natural relief from a variety of ailments. Projected to be an estimated $22 billion dollar business within the next few years, the CBD industry is becoming harder and harder to navigate. To help clear things up, let’s take a look at some common CBD terms.

Cannabidiol

noun, kan-eh-buh-die-el

Also known as CBD, Cannabidiol is a compound derived from the cannabis plant. Specifically, it is one of 100’s of cannabinoids that interacts with our bio chemistry via the endocannabinoid system. While CBD and THC are found in abundance in the plant, and therefore are easier to target for extraction, our products are all sourced from hemp that contains below 0.3% THC.

Psychoactive

adj, sigh-ko-ak-tiv

When a CBD product contains more than 0.3% THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), it is considered to be psychoactive. Psychoactive simply means that it is considered to be a mind-altering substance that may get you high.

Hemp

noun, hemp

Hemp refers to a particular strain of the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp is an extremely versatile plant that has been used throughout history to make clothing, rope, paper, and much more. Hemp derived CBD is not psychoactive.

Terpenes

noun, tur-peens

Terpenes give cannabis strains a distinct flavor and aroma. Limonene and Myrcene are two common terpenes. “Limonene has an uplifting, citrus flavor, and Myrcene is mind-relaxing and has a clove-y scent,” says Grant Rogers, brand manager at Extract Labs.

Full Spectrum

adj, ful spek-trem

Full Spectrum CBD products contain all elements of the cannabis plant (terpenes and cannabinoids), including up to 0.3% THC.

Broad Spectrum

adj, brod spek-trum

Broad Spectrum CBD products contain all elements of the cannabis plant (terpenes and cannabinoids), except for THC.

Bioavailability

noun, by-oh-ah-vale-ah-bill-ah-tee

This refers to the speed at which CBD enters the bloodstream and takes effect. Smoking and vaping are the most immediate because the CBD goes straight into your lungs, says Rogers. Absorbing CBD tincture sublingually takes about 10 minutes. Soft gel capsules or edibles can take up to several hours because it has to work its way through your digestive system and response time can be lengthened depending on how much food you’ve eaten.

Organic

adj, or-gan-ik

Hemp absorbs everything in its surrounding soil (including heavy metals and toxic pesticides). Organic certifications signify hemp that’s grown naturally, without chemicals or harmful substances.

Certificate of Analysis (COA)

noun, sir-tiff-ik-et uf an-al-uh-suss

Any credible CBD product should have third party lab testing for purity and quality. We test for heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials. You can find all of our Certificates of Analysis on our testing page.
